MNDA (North Wiltshire) benefits from charity of the month donation

2nd February 2015

As part of Cardwave’s 10 year celebrations of being in business, Paul Norbury, Cardwave’s CEO has generously offered a donation of £100 each month to a different staff’s charity of their choice over the next 10 months.

Staff members are picked out at random each month through various fun activities and challenges. February’s decision was made through a game of bingo where Lois McGuffog, our Head of Operations won the chance to donate £100 to her charity of choice in February.

Lois’ chosen charity is the North Wiltshire Group of The Motor Neurone Disease Association who have become very important to her following the diagnosis of a family member.

Lois commented “I am delighted to have the opportunity to donate to MNDA, a £100 donation can provide vital information to ten people diagnosed with MNDA.  Motor Neurone Disease is a rapidly progressive fatal disease with no known cure.  It affects around 5,000 people in the country at any one time.  Life expectancy is up to just five years and around half die within 14 months of diagnosis.  Without the local team we would not have had the support which has been invaluable to my family.  This has been from providing practical help with equipment as well as liaising with local services to give us the help required to manage the disease”.

The North Wiltshire Group of the Motor Neurone Disease Association is made up entirely of volunteers. They provide emotional and financial support to all those affected by MND and signpost to advice and services and have been doing this for over 25 years.

At any one time there are between 30 – 35 people living with Motor Neurone Disease in the North Wiltshire Area. We also help to increase awareness of this incurable disease to the general public, details of which can be found on their website

They also provide qualified volunteer visitors who will call on a regular basis and give support both practical and emotional to people living with Motor Neurone Disease and their families, signposting to information and services and acting as an advocate for the family.

Their support groups are invaluable to people with Motor Neurone Disease and their families/carers. The meetings held every six weeks provide a friendly and confidential environment where concerns, health issues, and the day-to-day business of living with this disease can be discussed.

Fundraising is very locally focused, and they help to fund home adaptations, provide specialist equipment including adaptations to wheelchairs, speech and feeding aids as well providing some time away to give a family a break.  All the help they provide is designed to allow people with MND to live in their own homes and with dignity.

Some typical examples of  where funding is used are:

  • The funding of home adaptations, creation of wet rooms to allow independent personal care
  • Specialist soft and hard ware speech packages to allow communication
  • Quality of life grants for holidays, carer breaks, and complimentary therapies
  • Assistance with specialist travel costs

For anyone wishing to donate to MNDA  please  send a cheque payable to MNDA to group secretary Mrs Barbara Crook, 51 Edale Moor, Liden, Swindon SN3 6LT.  Alternatively you can make a BACS payment to their bank account: Sort code 309609, Account number 3510394 – North Wiltshire Fundraising Group and mark the payment as from yourselves so they can spot it on the statement.
