Facing a data breach

3rd August 2016

The current average total cost per data breach stands at £2.57 million in 2016 – £200,000 more than it was in 2015. When the GDPR comes into force in May 2018, failing to meet the requirements will lead to even greater fines of up to 4% of an organisation’s annual global turnover, or €20 million.

The GDPR will still apply to all UK businesses that offer goods or services in the EU, or that monitor the behaviour of EU data subjects, regardless of whether or not those businesses only store data in the UK.

New reports of companies that have suffered a data breach surface at an alarming rate. Falling victim to a data breach at some time or other almost seems to be inevitable, so minimising the damage is something every business needs to consider.

To reduce fines, it will be crucial for organisations to be able to show the measures they had in place to try and prevent the breach.

Cardwave has created an ‘Information Security Solutions Made Simple’ guide to further inform businesses of the risks to their data and how they can reduce them. The guide also includes a security challenge checklist, and additional resources – such as template policies and an awareness questionnaire for employees – are available upon request.
