Avert a medical data emergency with SafeToGo™

18th January 2017

Healthcare data breaches continue to rise

The health sector handles some of the most sensitive personal data, and patients have the right to expect that their information will be looked after.

The latest findings from the Breach Level Index (BLI) state that 974 data breaches occurred in January-June 2016, the majority of which (27%) occurred in the Healthcare sector. Worryingly 91% of all Healthcare organisations have reported at least one data breach over the last two years.

With 263 data breach incidents already reported by the Healthcare sector in the first half of 2016, significant year on year growth looks likely in 2017 unless action is taken.

The sector remains a focal point for attackers due to the value of medical records on the black market (up to 10 times that of credit card records).

Beware of little breaches

Whilst large breaches are well publicised, experts warn that smaller incidents, often linked to human error/employee negligence, can be just as costly and require more thorough examination.

Incidents involving unencrypted USBs containing patient records being found on the street have been well documented. Every year, a huge amount of data is breached due to lost, discarded or stolen USBs, with the ICO reporting a continual increase in incidents in 2016.

During the first three quarters of 2016 the ICO reported that 30% of incidents involving lost or stolen unencrypted USBs occurred in the Healthcare sector.

Prognosis and precautions

The prognosis for the Healthcare sector is already far from promising, and with the new EUGDPR (EU General Data Protection Regulation) coming into effect in less than 18 months, bringing with it fines of up to 4% of global turnover (or €20 million whichever is greater), it’s vital that Healthcare professionals take steps now if they want to avert a major data emergency.

A simple, yet effective way to start ensuring data is safe in transit is to invest in encrypted USBs for all staff. SafeToGo™ by Cardwave® is a fully robust, hardware encrypted USB that protects your data.  It provides additional advantages to organisations as devices can be managed through SafeConsole™ giving administrators control over specific features such as remote kill, geofencing and geolocation of devices, full audit compliance.
