Cardwave makes second donation to the Marlborough Downs Space for Nature Project to offset carbon footprint

30th January 2017

As an organisation, Cardwave is dedicated to reducing the impact of its carbon footprint through a programme of continuous assessments, improvements and offset.

Last year Cardwave donated to the Marlborough Downs Space for Nature Project, purchasing trees to create a wildlife corridor at Rockley providing around 130 square meters of planting area for the scheme. To ensure that the donation was maximised, Cardwave staff also volunteered to plant the trees, rather than employ a contractor.

This year Cardwave will donate £632.68 to the scheme which, along with a donation from the farmer will enable us to complete the current wildlife corridor. Staff have also volunteered again to plant the trees during Spring 2017.

Paul Norbury, Chief Executive of Cardwave commented ‘Cardwave takes its carbon footprint offset seriously and it is really great that we are able to raise awareness of, and support such a worthwhile local project and would encourage other companies to do the same each year’

To date the scheme has completed approximately 400 m of a proposed 730 m wildlife corridor along the boundary between Temple Farm and Rockley Manor Estate.  The corridor is made up of a strip of scrub comprising the same species used to create tree sparrow villages, i.e. hawthorn, blackthorn and buckthorn for cover and protection from avian predators; and spindle, wayfaring tree, guelder rose, hazel, crab apple, dog rose, and dogwood to provide year-round flowers, fruit and berries.  The latest donations from Cardwave and the local farmer will enable enough planting to link an existing tree sparrow village on Rockley Estate with a nectar mix (insects for chick feeding) on Temple Farm, a dew pond on Rockley Estate and a tree belt between Rockley Estate and Manton Estate.

As well as providing a corridor for tree sparrows and other wildlife to move safely around the area, this strip of scrub will also contribute to reducing the rate of climate change through carbon storage, and help regulate run-off and thus prevent flooding of the adjacent road.

Jemma Batten, who manages the Space for Nature project commented ” I am really delighted that Cardwave has offered to purchase and plant another section of the corridor with saplings, canes and protective spirals  and I look forward to planting with staff in Spring 2017″.
