EU GDPR: One year down, just one to go!

26th May 2017

Are businesses on track for EU GDPR compliance?

The new 2016 Breach Level Index reports a worrying 86% increase in the number of records compromised year on year, although the number of incidents only rose by 7%. A staggering 44 records are breached every second according to the report.

Breach Level Index 2016 vs 2015

Breaches continue to occur across all sectors, a reminder that no business or sector should be complacent when it comes to data security.

The prognosis for the Healthcare sector in particular remains gloomy. Over a quarter of all breaches in 2016 occurred in the sector, thanks to an 11% increase in incidents year on year.

The EU GDPR becomes enforceable this time next year which means that time is ticking (loudly) for those who want to avoid fines of up to 4% of their global annual turnover or €20 million (whichever is greater), for data breaches pertaining to the data of EU citizens.

If you’re in the UK and think the EU GDPR doesn’t apply due to BREXIT, think again!

It is anticipated that the UK’s exit from the EU will take at least two years, the EU GDPR will be here in just one! Plus the UK government has already indicated plans to replace the current 1988 Data Protection Act with stricter legislation that mirrors the EU GDPR.

Data security: one less thing to worry about

The new Breach Level Index highlights that accidental loss (including the loss/theft of unencrypted devices) is still the second highest source of data loss, and although the number of such incidents fell year on year, some 333 breaches affecting over 290million records still occurred in 2016.

Whilst there’s no quick fix to most data security issues, keeping sensitive data secure on the move is easy with SafeToGo® from Cardwave®.

SafeToGo, a robust, hardware encrypted USB3.0 flash drive offers a simple, cost-effective solution to protecting valuable information whilst in transit, and offers the added benefit of being SafeConsole® compatible.
